ABOUT STATE EMPLOYEES’ CREDIT UNION (SECU)
The State Employees’ Credit Union [SECU] Foundation was funded by SECU members who established the “People Helping People” scholarship program in 2004 to assist students across North Carolina with their educational goals.
As the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) expanded its presence into all 100 North Carolina counties, it recognized many community challenges faced by the state residents.
SECU foundation initiative strives to help identify and address community issues and promote local and community development in North Carolina primarily through high-impact projects in the areas of education, housing, healthcare, and human services.
SECU Foundation introduced the SECU Bridge to Career Program in 2019. This is designed to help cut out financial barriers for students, unemployed and underemployed adults, military veterans, and members of the National Guard seeking to obtain state-regulated or industry-recognized credentials with marketable job skills which lead to sustainable wage careers within their local communities.
ABOUT SECU FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
SECU Foundation was established to help the people with four-year scholarship programs to help North Carolina public high school students attend college.
SECU Foundation takes an active role in assisting communities across North Carolina because it believes in “People Helping People!”
Each of the 115 North Carolina Local Education Agencies (“LEAs”)/School Districts receives a minimum of one scholarship for a senior to attend one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina System.
The SECU Foundation Scholarship program wishes to recognize academic achievement through the People Helping People Scholarship has a much broader purpose; recognizing leadership, integrity, and community involvement.
The “People Helping People” scholarship program represents an annual commitment of over $5 million and a collective total of over $50 million since its initial scholarship funding began in 2005.
The SECU Foundation Scholarship is only available to graduating public high school seniors who are either current members of State Employees’ Credit Union (“SECU”) or the child of a parent/guardian who is a member of SECU at the time of application.
State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Scholarship offers Two $5K /$1,250 per semester to college and high school students respectively.
SECU SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) offers both:
- The high school scholarship program
- Community college scholarship program
High School Scholarship Program
The members of the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) established the People Helping People scholarship program to help North Carolina public high school students to attend college and have the privilege to study for a period of four years.
Recipients of the high school scholarship will be selected by the LEA Scholarship Selection Committee once they meet all eligibility criteria.
No individual application will be reviewed by the Foundation, all scholarship recipient information must be submitted by the Scholarship Selection Committee at each LEA.
Community College Scholarship Program
The SECU Foundation also established a two-year scholarship program to assist students in each of the 58 community colleges in the North Carolina Community College System.
No individual application will be reviewed by the Foundation, all scholarship recipient information must be submitted by the Scholarship Selection Committee at each LEA.
Preference will be given to students with limited financial aid from other programs and whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees living and working in NC.
NUMBER OF SECU SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
There are 115 scholarship awards for the high school scholarship program and 58 scholarship awards for the Community college scholarship program.
SECU SCHOLARSHIP WORTH
The SECU scholarship is worth $10,000
The scholarships award can be used to pay for educational expenses such as registration fees, books, certification fees, and course supplies.
RENEWABILITY
The SECU scholarship award is renewable for the 2nd Year.
HOST NATIONALITY
The SECU scholarship is hosted and housed by the State Employees’ Credit Union in North California in the United States.
ELIGIBLE NATIONALITY
This scholarship is open to the citizens and residents of northern California in the united states.
ELIGIBILITY
This scholarship is open to both High school students and college students in North California.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for this scholarship, candidates must:
- Be a SECU member or be eligible for membership through a parent/guardian.
- Have parent/guardian as a member of SECU at the time of application.Be a senior at a North Carolina public high school who has been accepted to one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina System.
Be a resident of North Carolina under NCGS 116-143.1 and is eligible for in-state tuition.
Best exemplifies the “People Helping People” philosophy of SECU.
- Have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement.
- Be enrolled in a short-term training program (96 hours or more) that would offer a state-regulated or have an industry-recognized credential that is offered through the Wake Tech Workforce Continuing Education.
- Not be an employee or family member of an employee of the State Employees’ Credit Union or SECU Foundation.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The SECU scholarships are need-based and don’t require FAFSA documentation. Selected recipients will receive their scholarship awards after the completion of your training course.

To apply for the SECU scholarship, candidates must complete the scholarship application form that can be easily downloaded from the SECU scholarship website.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
The estimated deadline for the SECU scholarship is April 03, 2022.
All application processes and requirements are required to be completed and submitted by then.
